Following the 7th-century invasion of Iran, new restrictions were imposed on architectural adornment, strictly forbidding the depiction of human forms. Rather than allowing their artistic identity to be erased, Iranian artisans utilized their superior mastery of mathematics to innovate. They transformed Islamic Geometric Patterns (in Farsi referred to as Gereh-Chini, or Tarh-e-Eslimi) into a language of intricate complexity; a subtle, brilliant form of intellectual resistance.
